Coupon Swap

by Emmy on March 21, 2009

Some interest has been expressed in starting a coupon swap. There are a few different ways this could be done and I’m interested in which option you all prefer and any ideas you may have concerning this. Here are the options I have come up with…

Google Group – This option seems the easiest. I would set up a Google Group where anyone can post coupons they have that they don’t need. It would be sort of like Freecycle. You post your coupon, someone requests them, then you post when they are gone.  The only drawback I see to this is the person with the coupons would be paying postage. That could get pricey if you have a lot of coupons available. You could also arrange a trade, but unless you use a lot of coupons this isn’t all that likely. I suppose you could also arrange a meetup to exchange the coupons to avoid postage, but I’m sure some people wouldn’t want to do that.

Coupon Train – If seen this done before and it works well if everyone on the train is really interested in doing it. The first person send all of their unwanted coupons to the next person on the train. That person takes what they want, then adds their own unwanted coupons, and sends it on to the next person. This would continue until back with the first person. New people could be added any time and more than one train could be created if they get too large. Participants would have to commit to sending them around quickly because of expiration date issues.

Coupon Meetup – This option seems the least likely of the three to me, but it is something that could be done in addition to one of the other options if desired. Anyone interested could bring their coupons to a predetermined meeting place on a certain date and we could all swap coupons and get to know each other.

So please vote for the option you like the best and weigh in with any comments or suggestions you have about any of the options.

I like the Google Group because you can use the postage option, or if local, trade in person.

The Coupon train sounds like it may get expensive if the coupon packet is heavier than 1st class rate (unless each person is supposed to weed out enough that the envelope stays light?)

I think this could be a great service – thanks!

Also, with the Google Group, i like that you could propose trades, so I could trade my $7 of cat food coupons I don’t need for $7 of kraft food coupons, for instance.

I like the group because people could post wants as well. If someone needs something in particular I could keep an eye out for extras.

I also like the group idea best. As Renee said, I like proposing trades so that postage works out. It would also be neat to have a wish list section, or even better do a survey of what kinds of coupons people in the group are mostly looking for so we can see what’s really worth the time to post. Thanks for getting the ball rolling with this!

I have this poll set to expire tomorrow. After that I’ll fill you in on what we’re going to do!
