Cheap (but good) food

by Emmy on April 19, 2009

A reader sent me this a while back, and I thought it would be fun. He heard about 3 Buck Bites on a radio show and thought it would be interesting to hear about good $3 and under foods in the Harrisonburg/Rockingham County area. So where are they? What can you get for $3 or less that isn’t just fast food?

It’s hard to find food for that little in Hburg.

Some ideas:

Taco truck – 3 tacos for $3
Vietopia – Banh mi sandwich for $3.50

Rocktown Weekly published a handy “Cheap Eats” article a few years ago:

Foot-long sub from Subway for $5, eat 6″ today, 6″ tomorrow.

I don’t consider Subway fast food.

You can get fantastic hamburger at the Produce Auction out by Martin’s Native Lumber in Dayton for $2.50. These aren’t greasy icky fast food burgers either. Fresh grilled with fresh real tomatoes and lettuce slice of cheese and some great sweet onions. Add a cup of mint tea and bring your total to $3.

I’ve never been out there, megan, but Google maps says it’s 16 minutes from my house. I may make an adventure of it someday to see what this “produce auction” is :)

It’s an auction for produce, plants and things like that. Many of the Old Orders sell their produce through there. The auction starts around 9 I think, and it runs Tuesdays and Fridays.

For $3.50 you can get a wonderful mini quiche at the Harrisonburg Farmers Market. Fresh local eggs and vegetables. It would definitely be enough for a meal.
