The Wall That Heals

by Emmy on April 1, 2009

I know this is off topic for this blog, but it’s important so it needs to be mentioned. The Wall That Heals – the traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial will be in Harrisonburg and open to the public starting tomorrow at 10:00 am. The wall will be located in Ralph Sampson park and open 24 hours a day until April 5th.

I was passed by a motorcade yesterday escorting what I thought was the wall, but now looking at some pictures, I’m not sure it was the wall itself, but it was a very moving display. While I know my children will probably visit the memorial in DC many times over the course of their life, I plan to take them to this as well. I think it’s important to never forget those who gave their lives.

Just saw a bit about this on the news and apparently the tractor trailer with the wall was in fact the one that passed me. The wall is assembled and will be open at 8 am tomorrow with opening ceremonies at 10 am.

I took my sons to see the wall today. To say that it was a moving experience is an understatement. I’ve been to the original memorial in DC several times, but it was quite a different feeling to be walking the length of it with two children. It puts you in the position of thinking what it it must have felt like for so many mothers who sent their children off never to return. My oldest, who is eight, made it to the end and then started to cry. I think by the end it occurred to him that his grandfather nearly missed being one of those names.

A very nice veteran told him he was a real man because he cared and because he showed it. He gave the boys flags and when we left my sons placed them in the ground all on their own. It was well outside of the area where the wall was set up, but I think they knew what it meant.
